When Hammer Coral says, “New year, new me,” it's exactly what it says. Colonies of many coral species change sex every year. This pattern appears to be the first of its kind in animals.
In 2011, Shinya Shikina Researchers from the National Taiwan Ocean University were conducting a survey of hammer corals (fimbriaphilia ancora) Tropical Western Pacific. Researchers found that many of the colonies had changed sex since the previous year.
