The Mississippi River passes through New Orleans, Louisiana at an average speed of about 150,000 cubic meters per second, transporting more than 100 million tons of sediment from the central United States to the Gulf of Mexico each year. Standing along the coast of land made of such deposits, I watched the silt swirl brown in the river. The mud may be put to use immediately.
