Fusion reactors could allow countries to accelerate the development of nuclear weapons, producing the necessary radioactive components in just a few weeks.
Nuclear weapons require specific radioactive isotopes, usually uranium-235 or plutonium-239, which can easily split apart and cause chain reactions. This so-called fissile material is rare in nature, but can be produced artificially by sources that produce large amounts of neutrons, such as nuclear fission reactors of the type currently in use.
