ITER, the world’s largest nuclear fusion power project, has suffered a decade of delays, pushing its planned start of operation to 2035. This risks the publicly funded project being overtaken by commercial fusion projects, leading some to question whether the experiment is worth continuing. Is it time to shut ITER down, or is it still operational?
The reactor, being built in France, is the result of a major international collaboration involving mainly the European Union, China, India, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States.
