Mars surface photographed by NASA's patient rover
NASA/JPL-CALTECH/ASU
Pure quartz crystals, like other gems like opal, were first discovered on Mars. Researchers say these crystals and evidence of past hydrothermal activity, while also potentially containing well-preserved signs of ancient Martian life.
Since arriving on Mars in 2020, NASA's Perseverance Rover has scrutinized the bottom of Jezero Crater, a vast ancient lake formed by the impact of an asteroid. However, last year, the rover traveled from the bottom of the lake and began climbing up to the edge of the crater.
