The rapid growth of solar energy around the world has seen vast amounts of solar panels installed on prime agricultural land, removing trillions of calories from the world’s food supply.
More than 5,000 square kilometers of the world’s surface area was covered with photovoltaic (PV) panels in 2018, 1,655 times more than in 2003. Much of this was on arable land that could produce enough food to feed millions of people, a research study found. Wu Xiao He and his colleagues from Zhejiang University in China.
