If your goal for 2025 is to quit vaping, there is good news! A team of scientists, including researchers from the University of Oxford, has identified effective strategies to help you succeed.
According to a new review that analyzed 9 studies with over 5,000 participants, the most effective methods vary depending on your age.
For individuals aged 13 to 24, programs offering support through motivational text messages were found to be the most effective. On the other hand, for older individuals, a prescription drug called varenicline, known as Chantix or Champix, was identified as an effective option.
Since November 2024, varenicline has been provided by the NHS in England as a “smoking cessation medicine” to help people quit smoking. Early studies suggest that varenicline could also be beneficial for those trying to quit vaping.
Dr. Jamie Hartman Boyce, the senior author of the study, emphasized the importance of this research and the growing interest in quitting vaping among users. Further research is needed to explore these approaches.
Currently, the NHS does not recommend varenicline as a method to quit e-cigarettes. However, a free e-cigarette texting intervention program in the US has shown promising results in helping young people quit vaping.
