It was 21 years ago that I walked and swam alone, unsupported, across the icy Arctic Ocean from Canada to the North Pole, a feat that has yet to be repeated, and probably never will be, as warming from greenhouse gas emissions in the south is reducing sea ice extent.
It took three attempts over 15 years before he successfully reached the North Pole (in “high seas” in the central Arctic Ocean, about 770 km from Canada) in 2003. By that time, the nature of the 75-day challenge had changed to one that included an amphibious element, meaning he had to swim between glaciers and ice.
