Researchers are using weather balloons and other techniques to measure temperatures in Arizona.

For the past month, two trucks equipped with weather sensors, lasers and weather balloons have been cruising around Arizona's scorching city, taking heat measurements in exquisite detail. By observing urban “microclimates” from the ground, cities can more effectively keep people cool as climate change drives up temperatures.
“Arizona was the toughest environment we've ever deployed to because of the heat,” he said. Katya Lamar Researchers at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York are leading the study.
