NASA has announced that its mission to save the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory from crashing into Earth has unfortunately failed.
The observatory, launched into low-Earth orbit in 2004, is rapidly descending and is expected to enter Earth’s atmosphere later this year, breaking apart upon re-entry.
In an effort to extend the observatory’s life and scientific research capabilities, NASA initiated a rescue mission last month. Catalyst Space Technologies developed a spacecraft called Link to raise the observatory to a higher altitude and continue its work.
Despite successful launch on July 3, Link encountered orientation issues less than two weeks into the mission.
After initial communications and attitude control problems were addressed, further issues arose with the spacecraft’s systems.
NASA reported that Link’s attitude control system failed, causing rotation and disrupted communications.
Efforts to slow Link’s rotation were unsuccessful, leading NASA to cancel the mission.
Though unsuccessful, the mission provided valuable insights for future endeavors according to NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman.
Swift Observatory’s purpose is to study gamma-ray bursts, cosmic events resulting from phenomena like black hole births or star collisions.
Facing altitude decay due to atmospheric drag, Swift encountered issues during periods of high solar activity in 2024.
In 2025, NASA awarded Catalyst a contract to rescue Swift, leading to the failed mission.
Katalyst CEO Ghonhee Lee expressed pride in their efforts, emphasizing the importance of turning these lessons into future successes.
NASA’s Director of Astrophysics Sean Domagal Goldman noted the unique nature of the mission’s timeline driven by solar activity.
Isaacman highlighted the mission’s importance for future satellite maintenance operations in space as both NASA and commercial space companies expand their presence in low Earth orbit.
The mission may have been unsuccessful, but it has provided valuable insights and lessons for future space endeavors, demonstrating NASA’s commitment to innovation and progress.
