The emperor penguin holds the record for the deepest diving bird, with dives reaching 100 to 200 meters (330 to 650 feet) in the frigid waters of Antarctica. These dives are for hunting krill and fish.
The deepest recorded penguin dive was over 550 meters (1,800 feet). In 2013, an emperor penguin wearing an electronic tag surpassed the previous record by staying underwater for more than 30 minutes.
To stay warm, penguins have a unique layering system of feathers that trap insulating air next to their skin.
