The most famous of these is Project Orion (1957-1965). The central idea was to propel an interstellar spacecraft by detonating a series of thermo-nuclear bombs behind it, giving it powerful thrusts through space.
Years after the project ended, Freeman Dyson, who worked on the project, remarked, “We were a bit crazy thinking all of that would work.”
