Some praying mantises can taste leaves with a new-found sensory organ: a strange bristly bump protruding from their thorax.
The researchers who made the discovery say this “gustifolium” is unlike anything seen in praying mantises or other predatory insects. It may have evolved to support the very specific lifestyle of certain praying mantises.
Some species of praying mantises found in Asia and Australia cling to the underside of leaves with their bodies flattened, making them immobile.
