A microscopic version of a diving board violated the second law of thermodynamics 95 percent of the time. While this finding doesn’t call into question the validity of the law, it does highlight how diverse the laws can be in the microscopic world.
Our actions in the world are constrained by these laws of physics, which, among other things, set the minimum amount of energy that must be consumed to change the state of something, such as bringing an idle motor into a steady, controlled state of motion.
