In ancient folklore, mushroom rings were believed to have magical meaning and were associated with witches, dragons, or dancing fairies. However, there is a natural explanation for these phenomena.
Known as fairy circles or pixie rings, each ring is made up of a single fungus that is connected underground by threads called mycelium.
When fungal spores germinate, the mycelium expands and absorbs nutrients from the soil. As the core runs out of nutrients, it dies, leading to the formation of an expanding ring.
Mushrooms will then grow around these rings in late summer or fall. Some fungi create a “dead zone” in the center, while others enrich the soil and produce a ring of lush vegetation.
