A first-of-its-kind computer can use random “noise” inherent in our world to perform calculations. It is built using standard commercial components and may ultimately be able to run artificial intelligence programs more efficiently than traditional computers.
In a traditional computer, all calculations are reduced to a sequence of ones and zeros, represented as turning on and off many small switches. However, these computers have to contend with random thermodynamic noise, such as parts of the circuit warming up and causing a 0 to change to a 1 unexpectedly.
