    Es un trabajo espeluznante pero alguien tiene que hacerlo: los científicos estudian la regeneración animal en estas criaturas del mar.

    Cuando Mitoh se asomó a su tanque para ver mejor, se dio cuenta de algo aún más impactante: la cabeza cortada de la criatura se movía por el tanque, comiendo algas como si no hubiera nada raro en ser una babosa sin cuerpo.

    Mitoh también vio signos de que la herida de la babosa de mar era autoinfligida: era como si la babosa de mar hubiera disuelto el tejido alrededor de su cuello y se hubiera arrancado la cabeza. La autoamputación, conocida como autotomía, no es rara en el reino animal. Tener la capacidad de desprenderse de una parte del cuerpo, como la cola, ayuda a muchos animales a evitar la depredación. Sin embargo, nunca se había observado que un animal se deshiciera de todo su cuerpo.

    “Me sorprendió mucho ver que la cabeza se movía”, dijo Mitoh, que estudia los rasgos del ciclo vital de las babosas marinas. Añadió que esperaba que la babosa “sin corazón ni otros órganos importantes muriera rápidamente”. Pero no solo siguió viviendo, sino que regeneró la totalidad de su cuerpo perdido en tres semanas.

    Las heridas de la cabeza que las babosas de mar crearon durante la autotomía tardaron sólo un día en curarse. Órganos como el corazón tardaron una media de una semana en regenerarse. Para la mayoría de las babosas de mar, el proceso de regeneración tardó menos de tres semanas en completarse.

    “Hace tiempo que sabemos que las babosas de mar tienen capacidad de regeneración, pero esto realmente va más allá de lo que habíamos pensado”, dijo Terry Gosliner, curador principal de zoología de invertebrados de la Academia de Ciencias de California.

    Gosliner, que ha descubierto más de un tercio de todas las especies de babosas marinas conocidas, sospecha que la impresionante capacidad de regeneración de estas babosas marinas puede estar relacionada con otro impresionante talento biológico que poseen.

    Esta capacidad, conocida como cleptoplastia, podría ser lo que permite a estas babosas marinas sobrevivir largos periodos de tiempo sin su cuerpo.

    “Es muy interesante ver tantas características de regeneración en el reino animal reunidas en un solo organismo”, dijo Kusumi.

    Hasta que se revelen los secretos de las babosas alimentadas por energía solar, Mitoh seguirá pasando sus días observando cómo sus queridas babosas marinas se decapitan a sí mismas. Es un trabajo espeluznante, pero alguien tiene que hacerlo.
