Marine biologists equipped eight female sea lions with cameras to learn more about their behavior and hunting habitats.
Nathan Angelakis of the South Australian Research and Development Institute and his colleagues studied the endangered Australian sea lion (Neophoca cinerea). The sea lions, named Peter and McGray, were captured at Olive Island and Seal Bay in South Australia in December 2022 and August 2023. Cameras and GPS trackers were attached to their bodies.
The researchers recorded video at depths of up to 115 metres and witnessed foraging trips that lasted up to six days.
