Traditionally, summer is the season for sunburn and allergies, and winter is the season for runny noses and the flu, but now one pathogen appears to be upending our annual cycle of medical illness: the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.
The infection has also increased over the summer, and countries such as the UK, the US and France have recently seen an increase in cases and hospitalisations. In early April, an average of about 180 cases were reported per week.By mid-July, the number had risen to more than 500.
