Amazon executives have suggested that employees who are unhappy with the new five-day office policy should consider leaving the company.
During an internal meeting, the head of Amazon’s cloud computing business stated that if employees did not support the changes, they could seek employment elsewhere, as noted in a report by Reuters.
Matt Garman, CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS), mentioned that nine out of 10 employees he spoke to were in favor of the policy shift. The new policy will be effective for all office staff starting on January 2nd, with a few exceptions.
Garman suggested that employees who were dissatisfied with the transition away from remote work should consider leaving. He emphasized the importance of collaborating in person to drive innovation.
The new office policy was announced by Amazon CEO Andrew Jassy in a memo to employees, highlighting the benefits of working together in an office setting.
Amazon, with 1.5 million employees worldwide, previously required white-collar workers to be in the office three days a week, similar to other tech companies like Google and Meta.
Garman pointed out that under the previous three-day policy, productivity was limited due to differences in work patterns, hindering collaboration and learning from each other.
He also mentioned the challenge of following Amazon’s leadership principles under a three-day work week and will implement the “disagree, commit” principle on the company’s internal communications platform to encourage respectful dissent.
Amazon chose not to provide a comment on the matter.
