Amazon is aiming to provide satellite broadband services in the UK in the next two years by launching a fleet of spacecraft to enhance connectivity, even in remote areas.
Founded by Jeff Bezos, the technology company is taking steps to secure UK radio frequencies in the next one to two years for the rollout of satellite internet services, as reported by the Sunday Telegraph.
Various companies are racing to deploy their satellite clusters in low Earth orbit to ensure continuous coverage without the time delays associated with geostationary satellites.
Starlink currently offers connectivity through low-orbit satellites via small terminals and has a significant customer base worldwide. Kuiper is considering options for direct-to-device services connecting smartphones directly to satellites, with potential availability to consumers as early as this year.
Amazon envisions direct-to-device services as a secure communication option for various sectors, including government, defense, and emergency response. The company is working on ensuring satellite providers can access radio spectrum without interfering with existing mobile networks.
While Amazon initially planned to launch commercial satellites earlier, the timeline has been delayed, with the company’s rocket company, Blue Origin, also gearing up to launch the New Glenn reusable rocket.
