The decision made by Mark Zuckerberg to remove fact-checkers on Facebook and prioritize free speech in the weeks leading up to President Donald Trump’s return to power sparked public debate on Tuesday, with many criticizing it as a major setback.
The Meta founder announced several changes to his platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram, aimed at significantly reducing censorship.
He stated that independent fact-checkers in the U.S. will be replaced by a system of “community notes” similar to Elon Musk’s social media platform X, where users can add notes to provide context on controversial posts.
Zuckerberg also mentioned that the content moderation team will be moved from California to Texas to address concerns about bias, with Nina Janco, a former U.S. government official, joining the team. He emphasized a shift in focus towards catching less malicious content while still addressing serious issues like drugs, terrorism, and child exploitation.
