I don’t mean to remind you of your age, but the Game Boy celebrated its 35th anniversary over the weekend.
This iconic gray device served as the gateway into the world of video games for millions, appealing to a diverse audience of girls, boys, men, and women alike. Nearly 100 people shared their cherished memories of playing the Game Boy anywhere and everywhere—during family vacations, road trips, and even tucked into bed with a makeshift screen light (a.k.a. flashlight). The Game Boy revolutionized gaming by making it portable and seamlessly integrated into daily life, despite its basic technology and lackluster screen.
For a special commemoration, you can read in this feature my personal reflections on the Game Boy and its enduring impact, along with the stories shared by others. Thank you to everyone who contributed.
“I even used my grandma’s TV remote batteries to play.”
