Google is incorporating artificial intelligence into its popular products to provide summarized responses to search queries from users in the US. This feature, known as “AI Overview,” displays a brief summary at the top of search results alongside traditional link-based results generated by the Gemini AI model.
The company announced the expansion of this feature from the UK to the US at its annual I/O developer conference in California. Google’s head of search, Liz Reid, mentioned that the AI Overview will be accessible to over a billion people by the end of the year.
In addition to AI Overview, Google introduced a text-to-video AI model called Veo, which creates computer-generated videos based on written prompts. This model competes with OpenAI’s Sora and is set to be publicly available later this year.
Google also previewed a new AI assistant under the name Project Astra and a voice tool that can use a smartphone camera to identify locations, read code, and generate sentences. The company aims to release these tools in the second half of the year.
Concerns about AI-generated content affecting jobs in the entertainment industry have been raised, with notable figures like Tyler Perry expressing hesitance following the introduction of OpenAI’s Sora.
The AI summaries provided by Google aim to streamline search results by offering concise responses to complex queries. These summaries are generated by the Gemini AI model and are linked to other content, including web links.
Google emphasized its commitment to supporting publishers and creators by directing valuable traffic to their content. The company also announced updates to its AI models, including Gemini 1.5 Flash and improvements to its image generation model.
Overall, Google’s integration of artificial intelligence into its products aims to enhance user experience by providing quick, accurate, and helpful responses to search queries.
