Instagram is finally testing a feature that will allow users to turn off read receipts for Instagram DMs. That way, if you read someone’s message, you won’t see a “read” label under the message.
Mark Zuckerberg and Adam Mosseri both announced the feature on their broadcast channels.
“We listened to your feedback and started testing a new feature that lets you turn off read receipts in DMs. People will soon be able to choose when to show others that they’ve read their messages. ,” Mosseri said in a message.
The head of Instagram posted a screenshot of the privacy and safety menu for direct messages. To access this menu, tap your profile’s name below the chat. If a user is participating in a test, they’ll see a toggle in the Who can see your activity section to turn off read receipts.
Meta did not say at what scale the company is testing these features or when they will be rolled out to all users.
Considering another meta-owned app, Instagram was really late in releasing this feature WhatsApp launched the ability to turn off read receipts in 2014.
The company also plans to roll out default end-to-end encryption protection for Instagram DMs once the feature rolls out for Messenger. Meta said in August that he aims to have end-to-end encryption enabled by default in Messenger by the end of the year.
