Upon seeing her face on the generative AI website, April’s initial reaction was, “That’s really unsettling.”
April, one of the Madison twins, along with her sister Amelia, generates content for platforms like OnlyFans and Instagram. Their faces were used to create AI models without their permission.
She expressed her discomfort by saying, “It was bizarre to see our faces in a way that didn’t truly represent us. It was disturbing.”
Deepfakes, created using artificial intelligence to produce deceptive images, videos, and audio, have spurred legislative action to combat their use in creating pornographic content.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized the serious repercussions of using AI to circulate sexually explicit content at a press briefing.
The AI models of April and Amelia were hosted on CivitAI, a platform enabling the creation of AI image models based on a generator called Stable Diffusion. These models were trained on over 900 images of the twins’ faces, allowing users to produce similar images using the program.
Creators on CivitAI are fulfilling requests for customized models of Australian influencers and celebrities, potentially leading to the creation of sexualized images.
There are ongoing cases and legal challenges regarding the use of deepfakes, showcasing the urgency to address these issues at a deeper level.
