Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos has shown renewed support for President-elect Donald Trump, praising the former president’s plan to reduce government regulation.
Speaking at the New York Times’ Dealbook Summit, Bezos expressed optimism about Trump’s economic and technology strategy, emphasizing the importance of addressing regulatory challenges.
Bezos stated, “I’m very optimistic that President Trump is taking this regulatory challenge seriously. If I can assist him, I am willing to do so because there are too many regulations in this country.”
This shift in stance marks a significant departure from the past contentious relationship between the two. During Trump’s first term, Trump frequently criticized Bezos, Amazon, and the Washington Post.
Bezos defended the Washington Post’s decision to abstain from endorsing Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, emphasizing the importance of maintaining independence despite subscriber losses.
Other tech leaders like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Sam Altman have also signaled their support for Trump, indicating a collaborative effort between the private sector and government.
Bezos seems strategically motivated in his business relationships, especially considering the potential for his space company Blue Origin to compete for federal contracts in a future Trump administration.
Describing President Trump as someone who has transformed personally, Bezos expressed a desire to soften Trump’s stance on media relations and highlighted his growth over the years.
“You’ve probably seen a lot of growth in the last eight years,” Bezos commented. “So has he.”
