One of the technologies we still long for when it comes to smartphones is automatic screen repair. They may arrive within a few years.
Self-healing screens could be available by 2028, according to analysis firm CCS Insight, which published an analysis of the technology market over the next few years.
The screen uses technology that can repair minor damage such as scratches, cracks, and dents.
The technology applies a nanocoating to the surface of the display and uses air to create a material that fills in any damaged traces on the display.
Various companies have attempted to implement similar technologies in the past. So 10 years ago, LG introduced his G Flex with a self-healing coating on the back. However, this technology didn’t fully work on his 2015 G Flex 2 model either.
In 2017, Motorola received a patent for the use of shape-memory polymers that change the shape of the material through rapid temperature changes to repair damage to devices.
In the same year, Japanese scientists developed a new type of glass that could “heal” cracks at room temperature, making it possible to repair mobile phones with just a push of the hand.
It remains to be seen how far technology has advanced in recent years and what we can expect from it by 2028.
