Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, recently announced its new policy on digitally manipulated media as the upcoming election will test its ability to combat deceptive content produced by AI technology.
Beginning in May, Facebook and Instagram will label AI-generated videos, images, and audio with a “Made with AI” tag. This change will now cover a larger portion of manipulated content, according to Monica Bickert, the company’s vice president of content, in a blog post.
Meta will also introduce a more visible “high risk” label for all types of manipulated content, not just AI-generated, to provide more transparency to users.
Instead of removing manipulated content, Meta will now keep it but inform users how it was created, shifting towards educating viewers about the content.
Previously, Meta unveiled a plan to embed invisible markers in files to detect third-party generative AI tools, without specifying a release date.
The labeling method will apply to content on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, with different rules for WhatsApp and Quest VR headsets.
These changes come ahead of the US presidential election, with concerns about AI technology impacting political campaigns. Meta’s oversight board previously criticized the company’s rules on manipulated media as “disjointed.”
Meta’s policy on manipulated media now covers non-AI content that could also be misleading, making it more comprehensive and inclusive of audio-only and action-based videos.
