Keir Starmer announced this week plans to increase public control over artificial intelligence (AI) computing power by 20 times by 2030.
However, the government’s push to build more power-hungry AI data centers in the next five years is in contrast with its goal to introduce enough low-carbon power projects to establish a clean power system by the same deadline.
These green targets were already deemed challenging to achieve, according to Fintan Sly, the chief executive of the National Energy System Operator (Neso). Concerns are rising that the energy demands of the AI boom could jeopardize the government’s commitments to clean power, shortly after making them a key election promise.
