New calculations suggest that in quantum mechanics, the whole can be much greater than the sum of its parts. Combining several low-energy quantum states could result in a state that contains regions that are tens of times more energetic than any of the component parts, the study suggests. This research could eventually lead to real-world applications, such as building better, higher-resolution microscopes.
