While water typically obstructs the wavelengths absorbed by silicon cells, meticulously engineered perovskite cells can thrive in the depths of the ocean, benefitting from reduced light levels and cooler temperatures that enhance longevity.
Tweaking the chemical composition of perovskites during production facilitates the customization of their light absorption capabilities to suit different depths. The key challenge lied in enhancing the durability of the cells. The research team identified a highly effective additive, polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride, which proved instrumental in fortifying the cells in various ways.
By encasing the material in a water-repellent layer and incorporating additives within the perovskite crystal lattice, the team successfully mitigated common degradation issues while simultaneously boosting solar cell efficiency.
