Hurricane Update: Dangerous Storm Surges and Heavy Rain Expected in Alabama and Florida
Hurricane Update: Dangerous storm surges as high as 6 feet are expected to hit Alabama and Florida, particularly during high tide, along with powerful winds and large waves.
Furthermore, forecasts anticipate 101 to 203 mm of rainfall in southern Alabama, Florida’s Panhandle, Big Bend, and southwestern Georgia. Some areas may experience up to 15 inches (381 mm) of flooding, leading to the potential for flash floods, especially in urban regions. The risk of isolated river flooding is also a concern.
The National Weather Service has announced a hurricane and storm surge watch for the Gulf Coast area. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has taken preemptive action by declaring a state of emergency in 25 counties to address potential impacts.
Due to the storm’s approach, multiple major sporting events in the vicinity have been canceled or rescheduled. Notably, the highly anticipated football game between the University of Georgia and the University of Alabama, initially set to have President Donald Trump in attendance, is now scheduled for Saturday in Tuscaloosa.
While the storm is projected to weaken as it moves inland and loses access to warm water as its energy source, it is still expected to bring significant wet weather across a broad area of the southeastern United States, from the Tennessee Valley to the Carolinas.
