Environment Agency-Led Cleanup Removes 2,500 Truckloads of Waste From Kent Forest
The Environment Agency-led clean-up operation, which commenced in June 2025, saw specialized contractors remove 2,500 truckloads of waste from a forest in Kent. The waste, which had reached heights of up to 15 feet (4.6 meters) in some areas, was a result of illegal dumping by criminal gangs.
CPRE Kent, in collaboration with residents and the Kent Wildlife Trust, had been campaigning since 2024 for the removal of the waste. Upon completion of the cleanup, concerns were raised that criminal gangs might resume dumping activities in the area.
A representative of the “Rescue How’s Wood” campaign expressed worries that the logged areas could attract more illegal waste dumping. He emphasized the need for swift action from authorities to prevent a repeat of the environmental damage.
In response to these concerns, the Environment Agency has implemented measures to deter future dumping incidents. This includes extending a restriction order to prevent unauthorized access and digging ditches to prevent waste trucks from entering the forest.
Matthew Higginson, the EA’s regional environment manager, highlighted the collaborative efforts between regulatory bodies, law enforcement, and local authorities to develop a proactive strategy to prevent further environmental harm. He emphasized the importance of swift and coordinated action to safeguard the forest from future illegal dumping.
