Matthew Brown's entry “Goleuadau'r Gogledd”. Means “Aurora” in Welsh.

There are few sights as spectacular as the Northern Lights. The Aurora Photographer of the Year competition, run by travel photography blog Capture the Atlas, takes advantage of the dazzling effects of the Northern Lights.

?Wending Sun? ?Alex Wide Senja Island, Norway A 300? A panorama featuring a sunset and an intense KP7 aurora display taken on Senja Island (Norway). When you set out on a three-month journey to the north of Italy, you expect to witness some incredible sights, and this trip exceeded all my expectations. Arriving at Senja Island, my personal favorite of the places I've been lucky enough to visit so far, just as predicted, we encountered the most powerful Northern Lights of the year. The horizon sparkles with the light of the setting sun. In September, it sets at 11 p.m., painting the sky in vivid hues of green, purple, and red. This shot encapsulates the essence of the trip and captures the beauty of an extraordinary adventure that unfolded on an unforgettable night where the family and his two dogs witnessed awe-inspiring sights. I'm capturing it.

This year, 25 breathtaking shots from around the world made it to the final round, and we've published a selection of them here. Each brings a special aspect to this unusual phenomenon caused by charged particles from the sun colliding with atmospheric gases.

? The circle of life? ?Fridis Dalheim Lapland, Finland This is a magical place in the forests of Finnish Lapland that he was lucky enough to photograph one night in late March. There was a pair of swans further down the river, and I could hear them chirping from time to time. It was very cold, almost minus 30 degrees? Celsius, I enjoyed being embraced by the peace and harmony of this beautiful night!

As the sun's next peak in activity (known as the solar maximum) approaches in 2024, people are already able to catch glimpses of the aurora borealis over a wider area than usual in both the north and south. Next year's exhibition will be even more spectacular.

?A moment on the ice? ? MaryBeth Kiczenski Alaska, USA Hiking under the Northern Lights is an experience you'll never forget. The Northern Lights seen from the ice cave will be even more unforgettable. Both experiences are temporary, but for different reasons. Auroras appear and disappear as solar winds blow, while ice caves appear and disappear as the Earth undergoes cycles of heating and cooling. This particular ice cave, specifically the ice arch seen in this photo, collapsed during the summer. Knowing my days were numbered, I made it a priority to visit her in March this year. Therefore, this image has a special meaning to me, capturing those fleeting moments and reminding me not to take things for granted.

??I lost who I wanted to be?? ?? Jordan McInally Mauk Lake, New Zealand I was very lucky this evening, as some friends informed me that a big aurora was in the forecast, so I had plenty of time. , we raced up a painfully steep climb to this local spot and watched the Northern Lights as the sun's rays began to fade and beams began to dance across the horizon. I spent about 5 hours here and had this entire ridge to myself, capturing over 300 frames of all kinds of rays and colors as the show was constantly changing.

Many of the photos in the 2023 competition were taken in locations where the Northern Lights are rare, such as south Wales, and are captured in Matthew Brown's photography. Goreuadau's Goggled (Main image). The name translates to 'lights of the north' in Welsh and images show local landmark Paxton's Tower lit up. “It's rare to see the aurora borealis this far south,” Brown said. “For more than an hour, the horizon beyond the clouds cast shades of green and pink. But for one brief but magical moment, the sky burst
