A fossilized skull fragment of Homo sp. discovered in central Spain provides paleoanthropologists with new insights into the ancient human narrative in Europe spanning hundreds of thousands of years.

The fossil is a fragment of a parietal bone—a crucial component that shapes the sides and top of the skull.
This specimen was discovered embedded in rock breccia during excavations at the Middle Pleistocene site of Ruidera within the Ruidera Lakes Natural Park in Castilla-La Mancha.
Labeled RVH-1, it marks the first human fossil identified from this site.
“It was an astonishing and fortunate surprise,” stated Dr. Mario Modesto-Mata, a paleoanthropologist at the Centro Nacional de Investigación sobre la Evolución Humana (CENIEH) and the International University of La Rioja.
“We experienced a rollercoaster of emotions, ranging from initial skepticism to immense joy when it was confirmed that the fossil could only be human.”
Using advanced uranium-series dating and optically stimulated luminescence, researchers estimate the fossil layer is up to 224,000 years old.
“This fossil is just the tip of the iceberg,” emphasized Dr. Sara Díaz Pérez, a paleoanthropologist at the University of Wrocław.
“Ruidera holds much more to unveil about human evolution in Europe, and we are confident that significant discoveries will continue to emerge.”
Anatomically, RVH-1 is notable for its thickness and pronounced angle at the temporal line, a distinct ridge on the skull’s side.
Both of these characteristics place the fossil toward the upper limits of measurements observed in other Middle Pleistocene human remains across Europe.
“This is a robust cranial structure, resembling the morphology seen in other archaic crania, such as the Ceprano specimen in Italy and fossils from Caune de l’Arago in the French Pyrenees,” remarked Dr. Daniel García Martínez, a paleoanthropologist at the Complutense University of Madrid.
“The unique anatomy of RVH-1 suggests that hominin populations—encompassing modern humans and their closest fossil relations—with unexpected traits were still present on the Iberian Peninsula during that time.”
“These features were inherited from ancestral lineages and persisted until relatively late in the Middle Pleistocene.”
Scientists advise against drawing broad conclusions from this single, partial bone.
Instead of assigning it to a specific species, they have classified it simply as Homo sp., while noting its morphological resemblances to what is often labeled Homo heidelbergensis.
“This discovery underscores that human evolution in Europe was not linear, but rather a complex interplay of various populations with distinct evolutionary backgrounds coexisting,” said Dr. Carlos Palancar, a paleoanthropologist at the National Museum of Natural Sciences.
“It enriches our understanding of the populations inhabiting the interior of the Iberian Peninsula during this period, positioning Ruidera as a key site on the European map for studies of human evolution in the Middle Pleistocene,” Dr. García Martínez added.
The team’s research paper was published today in the Journal of Human Evolution.
