Hawaii’s Hawley Sea Arch: A Stunning Natural Wonder Lost to Time
The magnificent Hawley Sea Arch, a towering 90-foot lava rock formation, stood proudly for over 500 years before meeting its dramatic demise into the Pacific Ocean.
The exact moment of its collapse remains a mystery, with the arch disappearing from view between September 23 and 27, as confirmed by the National Park Service (NPS).
Warnings of the arch’s impending collapse had been issued by the NPS in 2021, citing years of coastal instability near the arch’s location within Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Situated at the terminus of the Chain of Craters Road on Hawaii’s “Big Island,” this iconic landmark was a favorite spot for tourists and photographers alike.
The arch may have met its fate during the temporary closure of the park due to Tropical Storm Noro, with damages from the 2018 eruption of Kilauea Volcano further weakening the cliffs surrounding the arch.
The loss of the Hawley Sea Arch represents yet another transformation along the remote and rugged coastline of the park.
In response to new cracks and instability detected in early 2020, the original viewing area of the arch was closed for safety reasons, with a new viewing spot later established at a more secure distance, according to the NPS.
A tropical storm later that year caused chunks of rock to break away from the arch’s base, underscoring the transient nature of this natural marvel.
“While the Sea Arch’s collapse is inevitable, the landscape will continue to evolve, creating new formations that will be just as awe-inspiring,” the NPS reassured visitors in 2021.
A wave of nostalgia swept through social media as numerous individuals shared their fond memories of visiting the arch, accompanied by photos and heartfelt tributes.
“Nothing lasts forever, but let’s cherish the beauty and wonder that surround us today,” remarked a reflective Facebook user.
