Being in intensive care is bad enough, but it can be even worse if doctors don’t know what causes the disease or how to treat it. But a US study suggests that about one in nine young people in intensive care could be diagnosed by DNA sequencing.
Most of the previously unanticipated genetic conditions discovered by this approach involve weaknesses in the heart and blood vessels, or a predisposition to cancer.
