Ararat-1 Cave, a fascinating limestone formation situated at an elevation of 1,034 meters on the eastern flank of the Ararat Depression in central Armenia, presents intriguing insights into the navigation strategies of Middle Paleolithic humans.
“The Caucasus is a region characterized by diverse geographical and ecological conditions that shaped complex environments for ancient human populations as well as unique plant and animal species,” stated Dr. David Nora from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and his research team.
“The archaeological landscape here is rich, with the Middle Paleolithic period being the most prominent, accounting for approximately 60% of over 450 known Paleolithic sites.”
“These sites encompass caves, rock shelters, open-air locations, and isolated finds.”
“They are strategically positioned across a variety of landscapes, including river canyons, terraces, coastal areas, mountain plateaus, hills, and volcanic formations.”
In their recent study, the authors analyzed 1,770 stone tools discovered in Ararat-1 Cave, located to the northeast of Mount Ararat and atop the Ararat Depression.
The tools date back approximately 52,000 to 35,000 years, during the Upper Middle Paleolithic period.
Researchers uncovered a narrative featuring two key raw materials: obsidian and chert.
Obsidian, a volcanic glass that served as the primary material in the region, showed significant signs of reworking, shaping, and repair. This indicates that toolmakers transported finished or partially finished obsidian fragments and meticulously maintained them, sometimes originating from various locations up to 200 kilometers away.
Conversely, chert artifacts were generally fashioned on-site, with minimal evidence of curation, signifying that they were locally collected and utilized quickly before disposal.
This distinction is vital because archaeologists often assess “select” versus “opportunistic” technology use to gauge group mobility.
Durable and versatile curated toolkits typically signify populations with high mobility, while local, easily replaceable toolkits suggest longer stays in one location.
The complication, according to the researchers, lies in the evidence from Ararat-1 Cave, which displays characteristics of both high mobility and long-term occupation within the same archaeological layer. This creates a complex narrative regarding migratory behaviors.
“The findings from Ararat-1 Cave pose a puzzling challenge in interpreting the mobility patterns,” they explain.
“Within the same geological layer, we observe two contrasting scenarios for mobility: one characterized by a high mobility toolkit indicated by obsidian assemblages, and another showing a lower mobility toolkit represented by chert.”
“These diverse signatures lead to questions about whether chert or obsidian might represent exceptions in technological strategies (select versus opportunistic).”
To unravel this contradiction, scientists focused on an unusual type of evidence: tiny fragments—often less than 2 centimeters—that result from sharpening and rejuvenating tool blades.
Many of the Ararat-1 artifacts were smaller than 2 cm, prompting researchers to develop a five-category system to track these remnants as direct indicators of tool maintenance, even when the tools themselves were absent.
By examining this maintenance evidence alongside the distances traveled by the obsidian, they propose that Ararat-1 was used as a transit point rather than a long-term base camp. It likely served as a stop where groups could rest, repair, and replenish their portable obsidian toolkits during short, repeated visits, while utilizing locally sourced chert for immediate needs.
“Our research illustrates that ancient hunter-gatherers were adaptive and strategic in their thinking,” commented Dr. Ariel Malinsky Buller, a researcher at the Hebrew University’s Institute of Archaeology.
“They employed a multifaceted approach rather than relying on a single strategy, skillfully balancing their portable long-range toolkits with readily available local resources, using caves like Ararat-1 as key locations for resting, repairing equipment, and strategizing future movements through challenging terrains.”
