Peak groundwater pumping could impact agriculture around the world

Groundwater withdrawal is expected to peak globally within the next 30 years as unsustainable pumping depletes available reservoirs. This could reshape the food and water systems that serve at least half of the world’s population.
Between 1960 and 2010, global groundwater withdrawal increased by more than 50%, primarily for crop irrigation purposes. Currently, one-fifth of all food is produced using groundwater.
