Can you identify these enigmatic close-up images?

These stunning and enigmatic images were captured by scientists and photographers, like Felice Frankel, during her everyday life. Take a moment to see if you can guess what they depict before reading further. We will unveil the details beneath each photo.

The primary image is featured in Frankel’s latest publication, Amazing Moments: Uncovering the Hidden Science Around Us. Each close-up shot, many taken with her smartphone, is paired with an explanation of the scientific process highlighted. “It’s akin to a guessing game,” she notes.

Page 94 Moment While sautéing an assortment of yellow, orange, red, and green peppers for a pasta dish on the induction stove, the glass lid of the pot began to reflect beautiful colors. I hurriedly grabbed my phone to capture the moment. Sometimes, one must act quickly to immortalize a fleeting event that may never occur again. Phenomenon The heat from the cooking surface evaporated the water from the peppers, creating steam trapped by the glass lid. The water droplets coalesced into larger forms, creating condensation on the glass. These droplets act as lenses, transmitting the vibrant colors of the peppers onto the glass.

So, what’s the answer? The primary image at the beginning of this article features an opal. The blue lines present are mineral veins. When light passes through the stone, it diffracts, and the size of the silica spheres along with their spacing determine the colors observed.

The above image was taken while Frankel sautéed peppers, where condensation formed on the pot lid. These small droplets acted as lenses, transmitting the colors of the peppers through the lid to the camera.

Page 121 Moment This second image came to mind during my study of pollen grains. A 2-inch (5-centimeter) agate sample was scanned at high resolution. I intended to crop it for an engaging final image. Phenomenon This detailed picture of the mineral agate emerged from layering or striations. Chalcedony, a form of silica, is the material here. Unlike the swift formation of pollen, agate layers develop over geological timescales, with diverse processes governing the stratification. In agate, this isn’t just due to fluid flow but a sophisticated interplay of diffusion among mineral components in the fluid in which they crystallize.

The above photo captures a high-resolution image of a 5 cm mineral agate sample. Its intricate pattern showcases a layer of silica.

Page 90 Moment While dining at a friend's house known for her culinary skills, I was intrigued by her claim that copper pots were the best. Though I had my doubts, while helping her clean the pots, the vivid color at the bottom caught my eye. I requested to borrow it, bringing it back to my studio. I utilized the sunlight streaming through the window to create compelling images with my DSLR camera. Phenomenon When exposed to heat and air, copper oxidizes (similar to rust on metal fences), forming a delicate layer of copper compounds, particularly copper carbonate, on its surface. This is known as patina formation. Over time, various oxidation reactions lead to the creation of distinct copper compounds, resulting in different hues.

Frankel was captivated by the glowing copper pot depicted above. When copper is heated and exposed to air, it oxidizes, resulting in vivid copper compounds that create beautiful colors.

Page 28 Moment I encountered this as I drove through my driveway after a rain. It took some contemplation to grasp the phenomenon before me. We now understand the source of this incredible color. Phenomenon Oil leaking from a vehicle creates an extremely thin layer (film) over the water, forming small puddles. Oil and water resist mixing. This oil film features top and bottom surfaces. Light waves (comprising all colors, with each color having a unique wavelength) can reflect from both surfaces. The degree to which a specific color (wavelength) interferes—positively or negatively (cancelling)—with others depends on the film's thickness. Since different areas of the puddle have varying thicknesses, the diverse colors are visibly harmonized.

In the concluding image above, oil leaking from the car forms a thin layer atop the puddle. Light reflects off the top and bottom of this oil layer, which varies in thickness, creating a spectrum of colors due to these reflections.
