Studies indicate that adult cats and dogs can successfully differentiate quantities, including kittens and two-month-old puppies, albeit with less accuracy.
Both species primarily rely on their sight to count food quantities effectively; other senses, such as smell, are less reliable. For instance, dogs often fail to choose the larger quantity if only odor is available.
Self-Awareness
The mirror test evaluates self-awareness: a mark is placed on an animal, and if they attempt to remove it after seeing their reflection, it indicates self-recognition. While animals like bonobos and chimpanzees pass, both cats and dogs do not succeed in this visual test.
What about a scent-based version? Biologist Dr. Marc Bekoff conducted a ‘yellow snow’ test with his dog, Jethro. In this study, Bekoff observed that Jethro was more curious about snow marked by another dog’s urine than his own, even if Jethro didn’t witness the movement.
