The world’s largest facility to extract carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere is operating in Iceland, more than quadrupling the world’s total direct air capture (DAC) capacity.
Globally, DAC projects to date have collectively captured only about 10,000 tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere per year. But Mammoth, Swiss company Climeworks’ latest plant, will extract up to 36,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year when fully operational this year.
