According to the 2022 Sleep Foundation Poll, people are evenly split between taking a shower or bath in the morning (42%) and in the evening (38%).
Although there is no direct study comparing the two, in 2019 scientists considered all the evidence for the benefits of a warm shower (or bath) before bed.
Research has shown that a relaxing warm water soak can improve sleep quality and help you fall asleep faster, especially when done an hour or two before bedtime.
Our circadian rhythms are influenced by body temperature, which naturally drops at night. Warm water can lower core body temperature, acting as a sleep cue.
Experts suggest that bathing at night can relieve muscle tension and promote relaxation before bed, while dermatologists recommend washing before bed to prevent dirt and grime from the skin transferring to bedding.
Some experts argue for morning showers to stimulate skin cells for a healthy glow and reduce stress hormone levels. The debate excludes the 20% of people who likely have different routines.
It’s always best to choose showering over not washing at all for hygiene reasons.
