Recent surveys in one of Africa’s last untouched biodiversity regions have unveiled dozens of new species, significantly contributing to our understanding of the continent’s rich ecological tapestry.
The Cassai Life Atlas expedition revealed eight new species of dragonflies, three new grasshopper species, and around 60 previously unidentified moth and butterfly species in Angola’s isolated Lisima Plateau.
Led by specialists from The Wilderness Project, the expedition uncovered various organisms and plant life that were unknown to science, including sizeable fruit beetles and tiny spiders adorned with vibrant fluorescent blue markings.
“The survey results indicated a higher biodiversity than we initially expected,” remarked Rob Taylor, the expedition leader and a conservation ecologist.
While abundances were often low due to these nutrient-poor ecosystems, the diversity of specialized and unusual species found was remarkable.
The Lisima Plateau is regarded as one of Africa’s last major biodiversity blank spots, possessing crucial ecological relevance that extends beyond its boundaries. Water from this plateau supports ecosystems and communities thousands of kilometers downstream.
“A comprehensive understanding of the biodiversity in this area is vital for the effective protection of the entire ecosystem,” Taylor emphasized.
This significant survey has provided the most detailed account yet of a largely uncharted landscape, showcasing species such as the crowned crab spider.

During the expedition, specialists recorded 47 taxa of grasshoppers, katydids, and crickets, including three that were previously unknown to science.

Scorpions and beetles were also discovered during the survey and await laboratory examination for identification.

The bush viper, a highly venomous snake, is among the 23 reptiles that were recorded in the area.
