A new volcano has appeared on Jupiter’s moon Io, spewing lava flows hundreds of kilometers long. The volcano formed in the 27 years between the flybys of the two spacecraft.
Astronomers used NASA’s Galileo spacecraft, which studied Jupiter and its moons from 1995 to 2003, to take the first detailed photos of Io, the solar system’s most volcanically active body.
