Preserving rural ‘green belts’ around urban areas helps keep cities cooler during the hottest months of the year, suggesting that new UK plans to build on currently uninhabited land could have an impact on urban temperatures.
We already know that many cities experience the urban heat island effect because buildings and other manmade objects retain more heat than rural land. Warm air rises over cities, creating a layer of low pressure near the surface that draws in cooler air from the surrounding countryside.
