A team of paleontologists in southern China has discovered an exciting new species of sauropod dinosaur, potentially representing a group never documented before in East Asia.
Yantaloong lini existed during the Middle Jurassic epoch, roughly between 174 and 161 million years ago.
This ancient dinosaur likely falls within the Turiasauria clade, which encompasses large, long-necked sauropods that thrived from the Early Jurassic to the Early Cretaceous.
The evolutionary links within this clade continue to be a topic of considerable debate in the realm of sauropod paleontology.
“Turiasauria were initially defined in 2006 as all Eusauropoda closer to Turiasaurus riodevensis than to Saltasaurus loricatus, forming a monophyletic group outside of Neosauropoda,” stated Dr. Ya-Ming Wang from the Geological Museum of China and colleagues.
“While the monophyly of Turiasauria faced scrutiny in 2009, subsequent studies have reinforced Turiasauria as a legitimate clade.”
“Nonetheless, the internal structure of this group remains ambiguous and open to ongoing revision.”
“To date, Turiasauria have been discovered in the Lower Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous strata across Europe, North America, Africa, and India.”
The researchers identified Yantaloong lini based on six presacral vertebrae unearthed in the Zhanghe Formation located in Yunnan province, China.
“The Middle Jurassic of China hosts a markedly diverse dinosaur fauna, primarily featuring mamenchisaurid sauropods, alongside some early divergent eusauropod and neosauropod species,” they remarked.
“However, no transitional species along the evolutionary journey from mamenchisaurids to neosauropods have been confirmed in East Asia.”
According to scientists, Yantaloong lini may occupy this evolutionary gap.
In various phylogenetic assessments, the species appeared within an unconventional subset of Turiasauria, along with genera such as Lapparentosaurus, Jobaria, and Atlasaurus.
Alternative analyses placed it as a sauropod outside the traditional turiasaurian grouping or even within Neosauropoda, though the authors suggest those scenarios are less plausible.
Anatomically, Yantaloong lini exhibits a mosaic structure: its vertebrae showcase advanced attributes typical of dicraeosaurines and titanosaurs alongside more primitive features characteristic of early eusauropods.
“Yantaloong lini enhances our understanding of vertebral morphological diversity in sauropods, illustrating traits such as pneumatization and the hyposphene-hypantrum complex, which support its phylogenetic stance as a transitional form toward Neosauropoda,” the paleontologists concluded.
The finding of Yantaloong lini is detailed in a study published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society.
