A common experience for many PhD students working in labs with glass beakers and fume hoods is feeling like a glorified robot. Testing much science, especially new materials, is often left to students, requiring them to repeat tedious tasks that feel like a waste of time and talent.

Artificial intelligence and actual robots may seem like an obvious way to alleviate some of this simple work, but for a long time even simple tasks were complex…
