The United States is increasing influenza surveillance as the outbreak of avian influenza virus H5N1 continues in dairy cows. Public health officials hope stronger surveillance will help catch and contain potential human outbreaks. But experts warn that without further monitoring, cases will slip through the cracks (even if they are not already being monitored), increasing the risk that the virus will cause a pandemic in people.
